ITIL is built around a process-model based view of controlling and managing operations. The IT Infrastructure Library consists of a series of publications that describe a framework for delivering and managing IT services. The IT Infrastructure Library came into being in the early 1990s as the result of an effort by the UK government to document the best IT practices within its own agencies.

Being a structured methodology widely recognised and understood, Prince2 provides a common language for all participants in the project. Nolan work, Managing the Data Resource Function which may be the earliest known systematic English-language treatment of the topic of large scale IT management (as opposed to technological implementation). Business Continuity Management describes the responsibilities and opportunities available to the business manager to improve what is, in most organizations one of the key contributing services to business efficiency and effectiveness. Implementation - During the implementation stage, previous stages outputs are reviewed so that recovery plans can be developed which contain all the details an organization needs to survive a disaster and restore normal services.

Incidents initiate a chain of processes: Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management, Release Management and Configuration Management (see following sections for details). Companies should realise that it is important to be liaising with Availability Management, Capacity Management, Incident Management and Problem Management to ensure that the required levels and quality of service are achieved within the resources agreed with Financial Management.

This function is the single point of contact between users and IT Service Management. These publications update much of the current v2 and extend the scope of ITIL in the domain of service management. Most people who've taken an online course will tell you that until you've taken one, you can't really know what it's like.
