ITSM represents a structured approach to how an IT organization goes about planning for, developing, delivering and supporting IT services. Operations should primarily work from documented processes and procedures and should be concerned with a number of specific sub-processes, such as: Output Management, Job Scheduling, Backup and Restore, Network Monitoring/Management, System Monitoring/Management, Database Monitoring/Management Storage Monitoring/Management. The IT Service Capability Maturity Model uses the CMM maturity measurement model. Other examples are being unable to find facilities or resources, having someone unfamiliar with the business implement the process, not understanding ITSCM's role in disaster recovery, or thinking IT has already handled continuity planning. This chain of processes is tracked using the Configuration Management Database (CMDB), which records each process, and creates output documents for traceability (Quality Management).
