To assist with the implementation of ITIL practices a further book was published providing guidance on implementation (mainly of Service Management): The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a set of concepts and techniques for managing information technology (IT) infrastructure, development, and operations. The processes and approaches incorporated within the guidelines suggest the development of a Continuous Service Improvement Programme (CSIP) as the basis for implementing other ITIL disciplines as projects within a controlled, programme of work.

Recovery options need to be considered for IT systems and networks, and critical services such as telecommunications and power. The discipline consists of a number of processes, explained in subsections below: PRINCE2 is a structured approach to project management. A major upgrade or release usually supersedes all preceding minor upgrades, releases and emergency fixes.

Design and implement procedures for the distribution and installation of changes to IT systems The goal of initiation is to define the ITSCM policy and charter the endeavor.

An option is needed for critical services that cannot be down for any length of time. COBIT (or the lighter COBIT Quickstart) is comprehensive and widely embraced. One of the activities to be conducted is developing implementation plans, including the emergency response plan, the damage assessment plan, and the salvage plan.
