ITIL is often considered alongside other best practice frameworks such as the Information Services Procurement Library (ISPL), the Application Services Library (ASL), Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM), the Capability Maturity Model (CMM/CMMI), and is often linked with IT governance through Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT). Although the ITIL covers a number of areas, its main focus is on IT Service Management. ITIL encourages company leaders and IT professionals to think of IT as a business that serves customers, not only to improve the efficiency of operations, but also to ensure that IT is aligned with an organization's overall goals.

Each ITSM process relates to ITSCM. The combination of the Service Support and Service Delivery volumes are generally equivalent to the scope of the ISO/IEC 20000 standard (previously BS 15000).
